An iPhone clip, before and after a trim: the phone's details were gone

We trimmed four seconds from our own iPhone clip. The copy lost its capture date, make, model and lens, and named the software that wrote it instead.

We recorded a tram in Melbourne on an iPhone, then trimmed four seconds out with a free video tool, FFmpeg: the kind of re-save any editing app does.

  • Report on the original clip: the creation date with its time zone, the lens, and the make and model, Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max Straight off the iPhone: when, and on what.
  • Report on the trimmed copy: desktop encoder software detected, FFmpeg After a four-second trim: the software that wrote it.

What changed

  • The moment recording began. 9:50:17 am on 25 September 2026, with its time zone. Gone from the copy.
  • The phone and lens. Apple, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and the exact lens. Gone from the copy.
  • What wrote the file. The copy now names the software that wrote it.

What the report said: Origin went from B to C ("moderate risk").

Nothing here proves the clip was faked. Re-encoding isn't faking: messaging apps re-encode almost everything. But it's no longer the file that came off the phone, and that's what the check is for.
